Book Spotlight: Get on Board Little Children

Get on Board Little Children
~Children in Hiding Book 1~
Victoria Randall

ASIN:  B00DAP2TZQ
Genre: Historical Fiction
In a future marked by high-tech surveillance, an unlicensed pregnancy is a felony. It can lead to loss of the child as well as devastating fines and imprisonment. Targeted by the corrupt population-control police, Sophie must make a painful decision. She can submit to the state's harsh demands. Or she can go on the run, relying on the conductors of the revived Underground Railway. Confronted with deception and violence, she must learn to trust her instincts. If she hesitates she risks the loss of everything she values most.

Fast-paced dystopian thriller, GET ON BOARD LITTLE CHILDREN takes the heroine from the drone-watched streets of Seattle to the dangerous Tijuana border, while exploring a future that may be closer than we imagine.

“In spite of Sophie’s exhaustion, her sleep was restless and broken. Dark figures moved around her, a sharp-toothed creature bared fangs and bit her arm, a tree reached down gnarled branches that coiled around her, lifting and carrying her away. She cried out for her husband, but he was not there. Her father tried to sooth her, but he melted away, replaced by Rivas’ stony features staring down at her, until his eyebrows crawled off his face and turned into black moths that fluttered away.”

Book Spotlight: The Girl He Knows

The Girl He Needs by Kristi RoseHappy Book Birthday to Kristi Rose's THE GIRL HE KNOWS! Check out the book's details and teaser, and be sure to enter the giveaway below!

THE GIRL HE KNOWS by Kristi Rose Lyrical Press

Waking up naked next to a good looking man is not a bad way to start the day. Especially since Paisley missed all those opportunities in college, when she was too busy supporting her no good, thankfully now, ex-husband. The problem? This hottie is Hank, her best friend’s older brother, a guy she’s known her entire life. Stopping after one night is the right thing to do. Being with him clearly breaks the best friend code, and from his career as a Naval officer to his Boy Scout reputation, everything about him screams monogamy and commitment. Two things Paisley has had enough of. When Hank presents a “no strings attached” offer, it’s too good to be true. She can enjoy him while still embracing being single. But, poor choices force her to confront old fears of love and loss, and Paisley has to decide if Hank is worth the risk. The alternative is never experiencing the real deal. Or far worse, settling for less...

TGHK5

Excerpt from THE GIRL HE KNOWS

He pulls me toward him and burns me to my center with a kiss, one with such intense heat I’m surprised it doesn’t disintegrate my clothes. I reach for the button on his pants. “No.” He grabs my hands and looks at me. “Yes,” I say. “No.” He stands and pushes me off his lap. “Come on. I’ll take you home.” He grabs my hand and pulls me toward his truck. “Hank,” I cry with frustration and tug my hand back. He turns to face me and throws his hands in the air. “What do you want from me? Sex? We can’t even go on a simple date. Jeez, I can’t believe I’m saying this.” He runs his hand through his hair before stuffing it in his pocket. “Maybe we could try another date,” I suggest. My heart flutters with the anticipation of a second date. The weight of time hangs between us as I wait for him to decide if he wants to be with me again. “You know, I’ve heard of worse ideas,” he answers. He links his fingers with mine and walks me to his truck.

Review: The One I Was, by Eliza Graham

Title: The One I Was
Author: Eliza Graham
Publisher: Moreton Street Books
ISBN-10: 1910229016
ISBN-13: 978-1910229019
Genre: Literary Fiction / Historical Fiction

The past will always find you out...

Rosamond Hunter has spent her adult life running away from the past, filled with guilt about her involuntary role in the death of her mother. Rosamond is a nurse, a kind of midwife for those leaving rather than entering life. Her work brings her back to Fairfleet, the country house at which her mother died so long ago, to nurse the dying Benny Gault, a former Kindertransport refugee from Nazi Germany. Rosamond soon discovers that Benny is hiding a secret about his last days in Germany he badly needs to confess, a secret that somehow connects with Rosamond's own family history. Just as the two begin to unthread the ties binding them together, a figure from the past returns to Fairfleet to menace the pair.

The One I Was is a beautifully-crafted piece of literary fiction that kept me turning the pages long into the night. It is a story of secrets and the release that comes from sharing them.

Rosamond is a "midwife for the dying" and has had the terrible events of a winter at Fairfleet estate weighing on her heart for many years. Benny Gault is her dying patient, who came to England from Germany as a child to escape the Nazis, and built a beautiful life in his new home. But the secrets he has been harboring (from his childhood in Germany, as well as some ethical dilemmas in his teenage years at Fairfleet) haunt him.

Rosamond's past has prevented her from making lasting connections or moving forward in her life. Benny's secrets are the last thing tying him to the world of the living and keeping him from moving on to the next life.

The characters are appealing, and some give us a glimpse into a part of history we don't hear much about. For example, female pilots transporting war planes, or Kindertransport which removed Jewish children from Nazi Germany before the war and saved them from what was coming. As Harriet (a pilot, the owner of the Fairfleet estate, and Rosamond's grandmother) tells Benny when he has recently moved there, "The world depends on some of us refusing to be the same as everyone else."

Adding to the sympathetic characters, page-turning secrets, and bits of little-known history is a gorgeous style of writing that is sparse and intentional. Graham seems to choose every word carefully so she can say in a short sentence what it might take others a paragraph to say. One perfect example is her description of the estate in the fall. One author might go on and on about the light and air and shadows and warmth, but Graham says, "October lit Fairfleet's grounds with a honey tint." And with that, the reader can build the image.

I recommend this book for anyone who appreciates literary fiction or historical fiction. This book is a keeper!

Author Interview: Jackie M. Smith

Interview with
Jackie M. Smith
author of
Colliding Hearts

“You’re so tempting, dear Alice. If only we could make this moment last.”

I love a good historical novel, and am looking forward to talking to Jackie M. Smith today at The Happy Book Reviewer about her upcoming historical romance, Colliding Hearts, due out this summer.

In it, Alice Malone dreams of being a writer, but her pending engagement puts a damper on her dreams. When she meets Ryan Quinn during the construction of Titanic, their attraction is immediate. With him, true love could exist despite the difference in their social standings. Ryan Quinn knows Alice is the woman of his dreams. He loves her courage and determination, but he fears another rejection and the possibility her engagement might take her away from him. Can their love survive?

I love that you deal with social class structure, but also that you set this during the construction of the Titanic (so much is written about the sinking, but so little about the time before). What kind of research did you do to prepare for writing Colliding Hearts?

Jackie M. Smith: For this book, I read whatever I could get my hands on, and I watched documentaries. I've always been interested in learning about the lives of those who helped build the Titanic. We have seen movies and heard stories about those who were on the ship, but nothing much about the people from the lower classes.

That's a good point. So it sounds like you started with the historical setting then, rather than the characters?

Jackie M. Smith: I've always loved the Edwardian era. So much historical events have occured during this period. Society changed in a drastic way. And, I believe the sinking of the Titanic, despite its very tragic end, helped change people's view of the world and society itself.

The cover is gorgeous! Tell me about the designer, if you’ve worked with her before, and if you had envisioned this cover or if she totally surprised you.

Jackie M. Smith: Dawné Dominique is the best! Except for my first historical Klondike Winter, I have worked with her for my SCP books. She has always put into reality the images in my mind. Every time, she totally surprises me. I give her my ideas and thoughts, and she turns them into something magical.

If a high school class were reading your book some day, what themes would the teacher want the students to pick up on in your book?

Jackie M. Smith: Social class structure would be the main theme, I believe. It is so important for children of all ages to know that the great differences between social classes once existed. Social class structure still exists today. However, until the beginning of the 20th century, the differences were a lot more visible.

You now have half a dozen books on the shelf. What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a writer?

Jackie M. Smith: The advice I would give is to never give up on your dreams. It can be very difficult sometimes especially if you don't get published at first. But, keep going forward. I went through two differents publishing houses before finding SCP. Finally, do not quit your day job until you can live off your writing. That's a hard one, I know. I have tried it, but found myself getting discouraged with the bills to pay. So, I continue to write while working, and promoting whenever I can.

As I writer myself, I second this advice!

I watched your book trailer for Colliding Hearts. Who created it, and where can readers find it?

Jackie M. Smith: Thank you for watching my book trailer. I'm so proud of my creation. Readers can find it on Youtube at http://youtu.be/6jqDjHdxv6w
Please do not hesitate to like and share the love!

If you could be sucked into any novel, which would it be? Would you be yourself, or would you be one of the existing characters?

Jackie M. Smith: Hmm.. Honestly, I don't have a favorite novel, but I do have a favorite era, the Edwardian one. I probably would be myself, living in Paris, wearing the latest fabulous fashion styles and fighting for women's rights.

What book are you reading right now?

Jackie M. Smith: Right now, I'm not reading anything particular. I'm currently in the production process for Colliding Hearts, so that keeps me pretty busy.

Ah, it is always a struggle for the writer... read? write? market? edit? There are only so many hours in the day! So you're editing right now. How about writing? Are you working on a next book? Can you give us a hint on what it is about?

Jackie M. Smith: Yes, I am working on my next historical romance set in the Edwardian era. It's a sequel to Klondike Winter. (smiles)

One last question! I love collecting quotes, so add to my collection. What is your favorite line from Colliding Hearts?

“You’re so tempting, dear Alice,” he said with a soft breath against her ear. “If only we could make this moment last.”

Book Highlight: Deep Green

DEEP GREEN

Leah Taylor prefers the quiet adventure and romance of books, but during a cruise with her parents, a terrorist attack leaves her adrift in a lifeboat with strangers. When Leah learns the dark secrets her fellow survivors hold, the truth will blow apart any semblance of civility and test Leah’s preconceived notions of just how far dedication can go before it crosses over into fanaticism.
