Hidden somewhere in the fog of the San Francisco bay lies Blue Rock Island, home to the bay area’s two best-kept secrets: Bell’s Bluff, the old, abandoned prison on one side of the island, and the Night Train, a mysterious train ride on the other. When twelve-year-old Molly Pepper receives a secret invitation promising a night of magic and adventure aboard the Night Train, she is skeptical. In her experience, most promises prove too good to be true. The fact that she lost her mom is proof enough. Still, Molly gives hope another chance. Together with her loyal friend, Noah Wonderly, they sneak out of the house and follow a string of clues leading to the Night Train. But when the train stops at Bell's Bluff, Molly discovers the real reason she was invited. There, she starts to wonder if hope and magic not only fix broken promises; but make you believe in them again.

Book Spotlight: The First Blast of the Trumpet

The First Blast of the Trumpet
(Book One of the Knox Trilogy)
Marie Macpherson

Knox Robinson Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-908483-21-8
ISBN: 978-1-908483-22-5
Genre: Historical Fiction
Hailes Castle, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, 1511
Midnight on a doom-laden Hallowe’en and Elisabeth Hepburn, feisty daughter of the Earl of Bothwell, makes a wish to wed her lover but her uncle has other plans. To safeguard Hepburn family interests, she is to become a nun and succeed her aunt as Prioress of the wealthy St. Mary’s Abbey. Plunged into the political maelstrom and religious turmoil of the early Scottish Reformation however, her life in the nunnery is hardly one of quiet contemplation.

Strong-willed and independent, Elisabeth clashes with those who question her unorthodox regime at St. Mary’s, including the notorious Cardinal Beaton, but her greatest struggle is against her stubborn godson, John Knox. Witnessing his rejection of the Roman Catholic Church she despairs that the sins of her past may have contributed to his present disenchantment. Will confessing her dark secrets steer Knox from the pernicious pull of Protestantism or drive him further down the fateful path that may lead to burning at the stake?

As he purges himself from the ‘puddle of papistry’ Knox finds his voice, denouncing everything he once held dear, but will that include his godmother, Prioress Elisabeth?

In a daring attempt to shed light on a when of unanswered questions about the iconoclastic Reformer’s early, undocumented life, this novel throws up some startling claims and controversial conjectures.

"There’s no rhyme nor reason to it. Your destiny is already laid doon."

Guest Post: Awesome Powers

Awesome Powers

Guest Post by

Rebecca Gober & Courtney Nuckels,

authors of the ELE Series

If you had the power to choose any power you would want, which power would that be? In The ELE Series, the characters didn't get to choose the powers they would develop. Instead, someone decided for them. The fact remains though, that in a future world years after Project ELE ends, citizens might very well have the ability to choose their own power. How would you choose? Based on a power that would work best for your personality? Perhaps even based on your preferred eye color? Below you will find the author's personal choices. We encourage you to comment on this blog post to share with us what choice you would make.

Rebecca Gober- I would choose gold- the power of telekinesis. How could would it be to be able to pick up objects or even people with your own mind. Or throw a tantrum and rip a tree up out of the ground and hurl it against a wall. (I don't condone the senseless abuse of trees, but the act would make for quite a dramatic show.) Now, if I were to choose my eye color based on vanity alone, I'd pick purple eyes. Gold eyes are cool, but I've always thought purple eyes would be neat to have.

Courtney Nuckels- I would choose dark blue- the power to heal. Having dealt with my own personal health battles and seeing loved ones around me that go through similar battles, I'd want to be able to have the ability to heal them. I have a passion for helping others and this ability would work perfectly with my passion. If I did get to choose a color based on vanity only, I'd pick purple. Now Rebecca, get out of my head! (If you haven't seen many of our other posts, we tend to have a very similar mind set, which of course makes us great writing partners. So it really doesn't surprise me that she picked the same color.)

Check out the below eye color chart and comment with your choice and why!

Cover Reveal: Fragile Reign by Stacey O'Neale

We're happy to help reveal the cover for FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2) by Stacey O'Neale! Check out the cover below, and let us know what you think in the comments. Then be sure to enter the giveaway for a chance to win a $100 Amazon or B&N gift card!

Details about the cover, from author Stacey O'Neale:

In case you're curious about the cover, the model represents Marcus. The background represents the woodland court and the caves at the bottom are where the members of the royal family live. I chose caves because the woodland court protects the forests of the world. I didn't think they would choose to cut down trees to make a castle, so the massive caves worked out nicely. If you zoom in, you can see where the doors and windows are cut out. The inside is very lavish. If you read FRAGILE REIGN, you'll learn all about it.

FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2) by Stacey O'Neale | November 18, 2014
It’s been a week since all hell broke loose… Rumors of King Taron’s weakened powers have left the air court vulnerable. Kalin is desperate to awaken her akasha powers, except she doesn’t know how. Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. To solidify her position, the council has advised her to marry Sebastian—a high ranking air elemental she’s never met and her betrothed. Will Kalin sacrifice her relationship with Rowan to strengthen her court? Rowan and Marcus return to a fire court in turmoil. Liana’s death has fueled the fire elementals’ distrust against the air and woodland courts. The unbalanced elements have set off natural disasters all over the mortal world. Rowan takes the throne to restore balance, promising to unite the fire court. But not all elementals are happy with his leadership. Many are secretly loyal to Valac, which means Rowan needs to find allies for his cause. Can Rowan unify the court of fire before the elements destroy the world?

Book Spotlight: The Spider and the Stone

Welcome Glen Craney,
author of
The Spider and the Stone

THE SPIDER AND THE STONE
by Glen Craney

ISBN-10: 0981648401
ISBN-13: 978-0981648408
Genre: Historical fiction
As the 14th century dawns, Scotland’s survival hangs by a spider’s thread. While the clans scrap over their empty throne, the brutal Edward Longshanks of England invades the weakened northern kingdom.

But one frail, dark-skinned lad stands in the Plantagenet monarch’s path.

The beleaguered Scots cherish James Douglas as their Good Sir James. Below the Borders, his slashing raids deep into England wreak such havoc that he is branded the Black Douglas with a reward placed on his head.

As a boy, James falls in love with the ravishing Isabelle MacDuff, whose clan for centuries has inaugurated Scottish monarchs on the hallowed Stone of Destiny. James's world is upturned when he befriends Robert Bruce, a bitter enemy of the MacDuffs. Forced to choose between love and clan loyalty, James and Isabelle make fateful decisions that will draw the opposing armies to the bloody field of Bannockburn.

Here is the story of Scotland’s War of Independence and the remarkable events that followed the execution of Wallace, whose legend was portrayed in the movie Braveheart. The Spider and the Stone is the thrilling saga of the star-crossed love and heroic sacrifice that saved Scotland during its time of greatest peril.

Praise for the book
  • Foreword Reviews Book-of-the-Year Award Finalist.
  • "[Craney] has woven a well-crafted, interesting tale." Historical Novel Society
  • "The best book I've read this year." John Graham, seneschal of the Society of Creative Anachronism
  • "It was a marvelous book and I was moved to tears." —Kathleen Ingram, Reading the Ages

“But one runt of a lad, inspired by a headstrong maiden from Fife, would not sit prey for an easy clawing.” Isabella stabbed the crackling log as if gutting a combatant, forcing the two Scots to shield their eyes from the flying embers. Her shuddering voice, taut with the emotion of memory, fell to a near whisper. “Nay, the stars had destined Jamie Douglas to stalk the stalker.”

Book Spotlight: Discernment & Touched

Welcome Lacy Sereduk,
author of
Discernment and Touched

DISCERNMENT II: TOUCHED
by Lacy Sereduk

ISBN:  978-0692229699
ASIN:  B00KOM4BFO
Genre: Thriller

Lying in bed at the end of a long day, eyes closed and relaxed, and you hear the voice of a small child, hurriedly whisper, "It's coming!"  Your eyes fly open and you survey the dark room because, the problem is, there shouldn't be any small children in your bedroom.

Have you ever turned down a darkened hall and thought you saw someone at the end of it?  Ever been awakened by something, in the middle of the night, and felt the hair raise up on your arms but there was nothing there?  Would you be able to stay in bed if you felt someone crawl up, onto the end of your bed, and slowly begin to pull the blankets from your shoulders?

Johanna Parks knows these feelings all too well.  Ever since she was a child, she's suffered from a disorder called night terrors.  Now just over 30, Jo struggle to hang on to 'real' life - her job, her relationship, her sanity- as the terror episodes become more and more vivid and everything, from visitors in the darkness to accidental injuries, tries to keep her up at night.

Discernment is a new thriller series in Kindle and paperback by Lacy Sereduk.  Discernment II: Touched is also now available with a third novel slated for release at the end of August.  If you've been looking for a book that can send chills down your spine and make you want a night-light, here it is.

"It is, simply, an expected part of life – Some days, it will rain and some days you’ll scream – Some days will be warm and some days you’ll see dead people – Some days you’ll buy milk and some days you’ll dive, head first, out a window."

About the Author

Blog | Facebook | Author Central Page
Lacy Sereduk is an Idaho native and enjoys long walks on the beach, reading, coffee, and video games. But seriously, I have suffered from night terrors since I was a child. I was always told that they would go away and, if they hadn't by the time I reached adulthood, they were probably there to stay. Another unfortunate piece of information that I received was that a lot of people who continue to suffer into adulthood, also develop full-blown schizophrenia by 35. I'm a little over 30. I fully believe that would happen to people like me because the world just starts to dissolve around you after so many years of exhausting torture.

My hope for my book, Discernment, was, originally, cathartic. As a way to 'get out' some of the demons that have haunted me from childhood. After starting and sharing to get others thoughts, it became clear that other people thought it was worth publishing. Now, my hope for this book, when published, will be to help other sufferers know that they are not wholly alone in their fight toward the light. As well as to help parents of children afflicted to understand just what their kids might be going through and how to potentially help them. Spouses or partners of adult sufferers might gain a better understanding of the dark half or our lives. Many who have night terrors can't remember what was so terrifying or are too afraid or embarrassed to talk about it. My sharing may help shed a little light on what they could be going through when the light is turned off.

Another aspect I hope to attain is that my own children will have a better understanding of who I am and how I became the woman I am today. And, hopefully, they'll cut me some slack for not making breakfast in the morning, when they start to understand just what my nights could entail.

Book Spotlight: The Girl He Knows

The Girl He Needs by Kristi RoseHappy Book Birthday to Kristi Rose's THE GIRL HE KNOWS! Check out the book's details and teaser, and be sure to enter the giveaway below!

THE GIRL HE KNOWS by Kristi Rose Lyrical Press

Waking up naked next to a good looking man is not a bad way to start the day. Especially since Paisley missed all those opportunities in college, when she was too busy supporting her no good, thankfully now, ex-husband. The problem? This hottie is Hank, her best friend’s older brother, a guy she’s known her entire life. Stopping after one night is the right thing to do. Being with him clearly breaks the best friend code, and from his career as a Naval officer to his Boy Scout reputation, everything about him screams monogamy and commitment. Two things Paisley has had enough of. When Hank presents a “no strings attached” offer, it’s too good to be true. She can enjoy him while still embracing being single. But, poor choices force her to confront old fears of love and loss, and Paisley has to decide if Hank is worth the risk. The alternative is never experiencing the real deal. Or far worse, settling for less...

Excerpt from THE GIRL HE KNOWS

He pulls me toward him and burns me to my center with a kiss, one with such intense heat I’m surprised it doesn’t disintegrate my clothes. I reach for the button on his pants. “No.” He grabs my hands and looks at me. “Yes,” I say. “No.” He stands and pushes me off his lap. “Come on. I’ll take you home.” He grabs my hand and pulls me toward his truck. “Hank,” I cry with frustration and tug my hand back. He turns to face me and throws his hands in the air. “What do you want from me? Sex? We can’t even go on a simple date. Jeez, I can’t believe I’m saying this.” He runs his hand through his hair before stuffing it in his pocket. “Maybe we could try another date,” I suggest. My heart flutters with the anticipation of a second date. The weight of time hangs between us as I wait for him to decide if he wants to be with me again. “You know, I’ve heard of worse ideas,” he answers. He links his fingers with mine and walks me to his truck.
